SAMPLE CUSTOMER REVIEW ON GROCERY AND GOURMET FOODS –

1) Tastes good, good for you, good for the ocean - Three main reasons why I chose and recommend Wild Planet sardines:

1) Tastes good!
I am not exaggerating when I say that Wild Planet sardines tastes way better than other brands that I have tried so far. I am a sardine fan, and I have tried a lot of other brands. Wild Planet sardines are very firm and meaty, slightly smoky, juicy and delicious. The sardines are very well cleaned and scale free.

2) Good for your general health.

a) No BPA( Bisphenol A) used as lining inside the cans.
Recently there has been lot of concerns about BPA leeching into food that many companies have switched to BPA free plastics and BPA free cans. Wild Planet is one of them. For concerns about the effects of BPA,see an article on this link. http://www.webmd.com/children/environmental-exposure-head2toe/bpa

b) This is a nutritionally dense food.
I would go as far as considering sardines as a "superfood". These are some numbers to give you an idea of how nutritious a can of Wild Planet sardines is. Please note that all these values are PER CAN because I usually eat a whole can(4.375oz) at a time. One serving size is listed on the can as 2 oz/serving, totaling about 2.5 servings/ can. In all seriousness, I don't know of anyone that would really open a can of sardines this size, measure out 2 oz to eat, so here it goes.
-- Excellent source of protein -25g /can
-- Excellent source of Omega 3 that you can EAT instead of taking pills. Each can contains 313mg EPA Omega 3 and 688mg DHA Omega 3. This is comparable to 2 soft gels of Amazon's best-selling omega 3 nutritional supplements:Nordic Naturals - Ultimate Omega, 1000 mg, 180 softgels But why take it in pill form when you can eat as part of one of your meals with all the added extra nutrients right?
-- Excellent source of Calcium - over 50 % Daily Value per can.( compare that to a serving of 8oz of 2% milk which on average has about 30% Calcium in it)
-- Excellent source of Vitamin B12 (over 100% DV), and Vitamin D(over 100%DV).
-- Good source of Iron (over 25%DV)and Selenium (over 50%DV) and
-- Also, as a bonus, contains Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a nutrient found in the body cells and believed to have an antioxidant and immune system boosting properties.

3) Good for the Ocean
I have been trying to be more responsible with my food choices. I try to eat seasonal, local and organic whenever possible. And as far as seafood, although a little bit more expensive, I try to get them "wild caught" whenever I can. However, recently I discovered that it is not enough for something to be "wild caught". Two other factors are also important.

--HOW THEY ARE CAUGHT.
Some of the things I have learned are indeed eye opening, and really help me be more aware and environmentally responsible as a consumer on what and where to purchase my seafood products if I really care about protecting the oceans. Wild Planet uses "free school" purse seine method which means NO FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) are used. Please see this video about FAD and why they are devastating for the ocean in destroying diversity of species.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVbp7PijR6Y

--WHERE THEY ARE CAUGHT
This second factor is just as important because because in certain areas, combined with unsustainable methods of fishing such as one described above, there are major concerns of overfishing to the brink of certain species of fish becoming extinct in that particular area. According SeafoodWatch, Pacific sardines are rated "Best Choice" compared to Atlantic or Mediterranean sardines because there's little bycatch and low habitat impacts.
http://www.seafoodwatch.org/seafood-recommendations/groups/sardine?q=Sardine

Wild Planet is in compliance with the green standards of Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, Blue Ocean Institute, Ocean Wise, Sea Choice and Fishwise. Greenpeace has also evaluated Wild Planet tuna products and has rated them as a top brand for sustainable sourcing policies. - See more at: http://www.wildplanetfoods.com/thewild-way/on-the-boat/#sthash.0pWGQHzI.dpuf

To wrap up, I love these sardines by Wild Planet. The fact that the company is very environmentally conscientious makes me love the product even more. I am currently on my second case ordered through Amazon's convenient sub and save. Compared to buying at grocery stores (if they even carry them), the price on Amazon is very good. The ones I saw at a Whole Food Market in my town was priced at $3.29/ can. So, tastes good, good for you, good for the ocean and not to mention good price here, what more could you ask for?

2) Good sardines! But Ignorant Reviewers! - This is the only brand I've been able to buy from any market that uses EXTRA VIRGIN Olive Oil. Most brands use cheaper non-virgin olive oil.

I use a can of this stuff over leafy green salad and throw in a few cherry tomatoes. Shake it up and you have delicious high protein salad with no need for saturated fat/carb stuffed dressings.

As for the other reviewers, they are entitled to their opinions, but I need to throw out a bit of education: The reason that these Sardines are not processed in the United States is because THERE ARE NO MORE SARDINE processors in the United States. The last one was in Maine and it closed down in 2010 - this was big news already. The reasons for this are multiple: California's Sardine processing crashed after overfishing of California Sardines ruined the industry in CA for a while. The cost of buying American processed Sardines was too high of a price for Americans, who simply opted to buy the stuff processed in Morocco and Portugal.

Blaming this particular company for sending off the fish to Vietnam is misplaced criticism. Blame yourselves for not buying American to save money only to complain about it later.

Seriously people.

1) It's way better than any other canned pumpkin on the market - I buy canned pumpkins regularly because my cat craves for them. Used to buy these from Whole Foods but somehow they stopped filling the racks. You just can't buy other kinds of canned pumpkin with this kind of quality. It's not watery, not sweetened, and no other ingredients added.

2) Great organic product! - This is the only organic pumpkin I have been able to find on the market. Great quality and taste. Less water than non-organic pumpkin puree, so I do need to stir it in a seperate bowl before adding to my dry baking ingredients. We love this product!

SAMPLE CUSTOMER REVIEW ON GROCERY AND GOURMET FOODS –

1) Best Tasting Coconut Oil I've Tried: Quality is A+ - Nutiva's Organic coconut oil is the best I've found. I've tried several brands, but nothing tastes as clean and pure as this. There is a definite undertone of coconut, but I like the flavor, even when frying eggs or eating it on cinnamon raisin toast. I recently had bloodwork done and my HDL (the good cholesterol) was an impressive 77---anything over 39 is considered in range; over 50 is heart protective). I attribute this great HDL number to using only coconut oil, butter, and olive oil in my cooking & drinking green tea.

Amazon's Subscribe and Save offer is a great deal; I really like the 2 pack of these smaller (15 oz) jars. We're a small household and I like keeping one jar sealed while using the other. Keep in mind that coconut oil is different than other oils--it is solid at temperatures under 76, so it will look something like shortening in the wintertime. Still tastes great and is wonderful to use in all kinds of cooking.

One more important detail: this is an organic, COLD PRESSED coconut oil. Others may be organically grown, but I've found some brands are hydrogenated to make them solid at room temperature (I won't go into all the reasons this is not a "good thing"). Suffice it to say that any coconut oil you buy should be cold pressed (and that goes for your olive oil, as well). Google to find out why...

Happy eating!

UPDATE 3/19/13: Updated the temperature threshold for melting point: it's actually 76 degrees, according to the Nutiva label (not 72 degrees as I previously guesstimated).

UPDATE 1/17/14: Something fun: I like Cinnamon Toast (just coconut oil and cinnamon on top of a piece of raisin bread, broiled under the broiler. No sugar.). I've been eating it for YEARS & about a month ago, I asked myself why I was making such a mess by sprinkling the cinnamon ON TOP of the coconut oil. Call it a EUREKA Moment. I poured about 1/3 cup of ground cinnamon into a half-used 15 oz. tub of coconut oil and stirred well. Voila--CINNAMON COCONUT OIL (it looks exactly like nutella spread, BTW). It works fantastically well and makes and even more delicious (and neater) cinnamon toast than my other, more primitive method.

Hello, Nutiva--you need to market a cinnamon version of your delightful coconut oil! Till they do, try making your own; I think you're going to love it.

2) COMPARISON REVIEW to Nature's Way - When I learned about the many benefits and uses of coconut oil I had to try it, so I ordered 2 jars -one for my pantry for cooking/smoothies etc. and one for my bathroom to use as a body cream. Since I didn't know what brand to choose and didn't have any prior experience with coconut oil I decided to get one jar of the NUTIVA brand and one jar of the NATURE'S WAY brand.

Here's my initial opinion of both: With my Nutiva jar there's a sticker indicating the expiration date and package/creation date of the actual oil, whereas with my Nature's Way jar there's nothing like that. When I opened both of them up to try and to just generally check them out I tasted a tiny amount of both and it was very clear that the Nutiva jar's coconut oil tasted much better. I'm not sure exactly why, but to me the Nature's Way coconut oil didn't taste as good, it was kind of toasty in a bad way.

It was very easy for me to decide to use the Nutiva brand coconut oil for my cooking and in my smoothies and the Nature's Way coconut oil for my skin. I've since read that this difference in taste could be because the Nutiva brand coconut oil was fresher and the Nature's Way older. Or it could be quality, I'm really not sure. But I am sure that from now on I'm going to just be buying the Nutiva brand Coconut Oil (just ordered 2 more big jars of it). :)

To say that the Nature's Way coconut oil was toasty still isn't exactly the right word -toasty sounds like something good... when it's so not, but I really can't think of a better word to describe the difference.

I've found a lot of uses for coconut oil and have used it for many things with great results so far. It's hard to believe one little oil can do so much! Weird actually, but everything I've tried it with so far has had positive results.

So here's a list of weird, random, but completely amazing things I've found coconut oil to do:

-Works better than any make-up remover: seriously, just use a nickle size amount or less on your eyes to get all eye make-up off in a flash.

-Helps clear up acne: One night after using it to take off my eye make-up I decided to use it as an all over face make-up remover... then decided my face felt so good I didn't want to use anything else (hint: leave the coconut oil on your face for a minute and then get your water and washcloth really really hot to wipe it all away). I googled to see if this was okay to do and it turns out coconut oil can help get rid of acne! You can use it as a facewash. Strange but true. BUT I also found out that Castor Oil works even better for this (and like coconut oil still moisturizes your face and keeps it from drying out), so I've ordered a small bottle of that to use instead in the future... but still, coconut oil has worked really well for me and apparently others. When you have skin like mine (I'm 25) that occassionally breaks out but still is a little dry sometimes it's hard finding the right balance and exactly the right thing to use -I feel like now I've figured out some great secret to getting it right.

-You can use it as a deoderant: This one I read online and decided to try on a day where I wasn't really doing anything or working out. It felt weird -like I was putting some kind of lotion or body creme under my arms instead of my normal Secret deoderant. But guess what? It worked! I have since been trying it on days where I actually do work out and it STILL is working. Craziness! It keeps me dry and smelling good the same as my old deoderant did. AND there's no aluminum zirconium (have no idea how to spell that correctly) which I know is now supposedly bad for you (most deoderants still use it though) because it's connected/correlated with Alzheimers. So... an all natural, organic, one ingredient deoderant that feels like a body creme -doesn't get much better than that! Plus my underarms are looking softer/nicer. :)

-You can use it on your scalp and hair: Now I've tried this several times and although I DO like the way it moisturizes my hair, I don't like the way my hair looks after I wash it out... it's just kind of lanky/heavy. Not in an extreme way or anything, but I like my hair to have lots of body. So while I do recommend coconut oil to help heal frazzled hair and stimulate hair growth I don't recommend doing it right before any big event in your life... maybe like a few days before so you get the benefit of the moisturized, healthy hair, without any worries about styling it. This is another one where I've looked it up and found that Castor Oil when massaged in the scalp can stimulate hair growth/fast hair growth even better -so now that I've got that bottle on the way to me from amazon I'll probably be using that instead, at least on my scalp.

-You can use it as a body creme and even a BODY WASH. Yepp. A body WASH. Sounds crazy, but it makes my skin look SO good. Better than it's ever looked actually. Coconut oil has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties (and of course is moisturizing) and will clean your skin while hydrating it. So no harsh chemicals or detergents touch your skin -and if you have sensitive skin like I do, well this stuff might just be your new best friend, must-have, can't live without it ever, stuff! I used to have a minor skin problem on my arms that I absolutely hated. Just general redness, sensitivity, and tiny little red dots on the tops of my arms (that I've had since childhood). Now I absolutely don't -and it's literally all because of coconut oil. Maybe it's because I'm not putting soaps/bodywash on my skin anymore or maybe it's because coconut oil is really that awesome, but it has basically cured my arms and has made the skin all over my body look amazing! I seriously can't believe how good it makes my skin look! The best thing to do is to literally use it like a body wash all over -rinse off and then either just towel dry and go or towel dry and then reapply again if your skin is dry or it's winter or you live in a dry climate. When you reapply you're going to have to have some kind of small towel to wipe off excess with before you put on clothes. Either way it makes your skin look great. :) You can also use it to shave with apparently but I haven't tried that. I'm using it to make my own homemade body scrubs and of course using it as a body creme and loving it!

-You can feed it to your dogs (one tablespoon a day) to make their coats shiny. (I've been giving it to both my dogs, although not every single day and they love it.

-It can help you lose weight. Apparently it has a lot of really GOOD for you fats that your body doesn't treat like other fats and it actually helps you lose weight (learned this from Dr. Oz). Plus it tastes good when you cook with it and put it in smoothies. Actually I LOVE it in smoothies, it just adds an extra tropical coconut flavor. :-)

-You can use it for Oil Pulling.

-You can use it as a lip balm.

Plus I know there's so much more but that's all I can think of right now! Basically it's really good stuff that I am now believing everyone should have in their home! :-)
